How to bake a cake from scratch is easier than you think. You just need a good recipe, fresh ingredients and to follow each of the following steps. Here we will tell you exactly how to bake a cake from scratch. For a basic butter cake, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 3 ¼ cups of cake flour
  • 1 ½ cups of sugar
  • 1 cup of softened butter
  • 1 ¼ cups of milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3 large egg yokes
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 2 ½ tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

It’s important to check you have all the ingredients together before you start. The last thing you want to be doing, when you bake a cake from scratch, is running between the grocery store and your kitchen.

Get hold of 2 round cake tine about 9 inches round in diameter. Flour and butter each tin and preheat your oven to 350F. Take the butter and sugar and mix together using a mixer on a medium to high speed until all nice and fluffy. This should take a couple of minutes and if you have to do this by hand, it will take a lot longer.

It’s very important that the sugar and butter are well mixed together as this is what causes the cake to have that light and fluffy texture, making the perfect cake.

The next step on how to bake a cake from scratch is to add each egg, one at a time into the mixture, When this is done, add in each egg yolk  and again, add in each one at a time. Beat well between each egg and yolk. Once all the eggs are added, beat in the vanilla and fetch yourself a separate mixing bowl.

In the separate mixing bowl, mix the salt, baking powder and cake flour together. Take a third of this mixture (the flour mixture) and add this to the butter / sugar mixture. Mix this together well for several minutes before adding in half the milk. Mix in these ingredients together.

Take another third of the cake flour mixture and add to the butter / sugar mixture and stir in well together before adding in the remaining milk. Once this is mixed, finish off by adding in the remainder of the cake flour mixture and again, mix in well together.

Take the mixture and divide equally between the 2 cake tins.

Place the cakes into the preheated oven and bake the mixture for about 25 to 30 minutes. A good way to check the cake is ready is by skewing the centre and if the skewer when removed is clean, the cake is ready.

Once baked, remove the cakes from the tins and place of a wire rack to cool for at least 10 minutes.
